Natural Area Restoration

Natural area restoration involves restoring the natural assets and resilience of native vegetation communities that have been degraded by weed infestation and unsustainable land practices. Skill and a sound understanding of natural resource processes is required to prepare and coordinate a successful management project.

I have been coordinating natural area restoration projects to a high standard since 1999.
The coordination role begins at the projects inception and passes through many phases depending on the contract or the funding body requirements, ending with the final report.
Projects current & completed focus on the rehabilitation and management of the natural & altered environments including; native bush, old growth forest, riparian corridors along creek banks, coastal habitats, wetlands and degraded land. Excellent outcomes have been achieved on a broad range of projects.
Professionalism, integrity and a passion for the natural environment ensure a high quality service is delivered by the due date and within budget.
On-ground environmental work is undertaken by skilled & trained bush regenerators with many years experience, all work is under the direct supervision of Julie Reid. The business enjoys professional support from a diverse array of specialist contractors, community groups and partners.
The business aim is to conserve and manage natural areas by offering integrated environmental management and services including:

  • Advice & assistance with preparing funding applications and budgets
  • Preparation of reports as per the specific requirements of the funding body
  • Monitoring and evaluation of contracted work
  • Site assessments with recommendation for optimum environmental outcomes
  • Preparation of site, property or regional plans of management for natural environments
  • Environmental weed control using techniques specific to the target weed
  • Plant identification and recording (flora surveys)
  • Assisted regeneration and infill planting to restore native vegetation communities
  • Revegetation services including planting, direct seeding and maintenance of plants
  • Seed collection, processing & storage
  • Native plant propagation from seed collected on site or with local provenance
  • Fauna Surveys
  • Complete environmental planning and management services

Environmental Education

Environmental Education involves everyone. Because of its very nature and importance, environmental education cannot be confined to any one group in our society. I have nineteen years experience designing and delivering environmental education to government, industry, the media, educational institutions, community and school groups as well as individuals. I can deliver both accredited and non accredited training and can design a stimulating environmental package to suit the needs of the client.

  1. Field Days & Workshops
Coordination, promotion and delivery of field days and workshops on a range of natural resource management topics.
  2. Media Services
Print(newspapers, books, pamphlets) and electronic media (television, radio, Internet) production and delivery.
  3. Accredited Training
Accredited training in Conservation and Land Management (AHC10) units
  4. Non-Accredited Training
Individual and group training in weed and plant identification and weed control techniques.
  5. School Education
Outdoor school education including NSW Waterwatch bug surveys and water testing, fauna surveys (tracks and scats), seed collection, propagation and planting, threatened species exercises. Environmental education can be designed and delivered in line with the new K-10 NSW Mathematics and Science syllabuses.
  6. Mentoring
Mentoring in the process of preparing a funding application to undertake environmental restoration work.

Contractual/Legislative Documentation

The NSW and Australian Government will only do business with those members of industry who demonstrate and can provide evidence of a commitment to the principles of work health and safety and sound environmental management in all aspects of their work.

  1. Hazard & Risk Management
Identification of workplace hazards specific to the job and changing work sites and the preparation of personalised hazard and risk assessment proformas as a daily checklist. Checklist researched and compiled in accordance with legislative requirements.
  2. Safe Work Method Statements(SWMS)
The WHS Act 2011 states that a safe work method statement (SWMS) must be prepared for all high risk construction work. However clients, specifically local and state governmnents, often state that low risk work in the environmental sector also requires a SWMS.
    The document must:
    • list the types of work being done
    • state the health and safety hazards and risks arising from each step of the work to be carried out
    • describe how the risks will be controlled
    • describe how the risk control measures will be implemented, monitored and reviewed
    • take into consideration factors that may affect the way in which the high risk work is carried out
    • be readily accessible and easy to read by all workers and visitors to a site.
  3. WHS Emergency Plans
An emergency plan must be prepared, maintained and implemented by the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU – the new term that includes employers) for the workplace.
    The emergency plan must provide:
    • emergency procedures including:
      • an effective response to an emergency
      • evacuation procedures
      • notifying emergency service organisations promptly
      • medical treatment and assistance
      • effective communication between the authorised person who coordinates the emergency response and all persons at the workplace.
    • procedure for testing of the emergency procedures, including the frequency of testing.
    • information, training and instruction to relevant workers in relation to implementing the emergency procedures.
  4. Environmental Management Systems(EMS)
When procuring government contracts or as a sub contracting to government funded commercial projects, an organisation must demonstrate that they have researched and have a monitored system in place to minimise any threats to the environment. Environmental programs need a comprehensive, systematic, planned and documented approach to the work to be undertaken. This document EMS, includes the organizational structure, planning and resources for developing, implementing and maintaining policy for environmental protection.
